Last Chapter Comes First: The five moves to write your brand identity like a bestselling book
What do a grand finale, an adrenaline-filled adventure, and a personal peak experience have in common? They all illustrate the importance of designing with the end in mind. In this episode, Amera Fattah walks through five reflective practices for designing a brand and an identity backward from the ending you actually want — from the words you use to measure success, to a hands-on sketching exercise anyone can do with imagination and intention.
Transcribing the Vision in Your Mind into Brand Visibility
The relevancy of designing with the end in mind is that of creating a movement to a destination, because our questions are essentially the answers we seek - reworded, renoted, re known. It can only be within our cognition, our consciousness, and our character that the formula of a form of you is crafted with the make of our ask.
n the realm of business transformation, refining definition involves uncovering excess and adjusting access. Through this process of revelation and maneuvering, a mental landscape is established for connecting, engaging, attending to, and retaining your identity messaging within the business, being, and brand.
In our existence - whether as a human body, a human being, or a human brand, we transition from a race of persons to a space of belongings, like energetic bodies and spiritual figurines. We’re all exploring outer, inner, and existential realms. This serves as a reminder that our days are dedicated to discovery, recovery, and the unfolding narrative of our own mystery.
Let’s unravel our fact-based mindset and intermingle in the chaos of the unknown. Read how to create a brand narrative that captivates and retains attention by starting with the finale.
The Five Moves to Your Brand's Story
Amera, host of Pause Twice, outlines five must-do steps to guide you in crafting your brand’s identity.
1. Name the Book
Every great story begins with a title. What will yours be? Your brand needs a title that resonates with its essence, not just industry jargon. It should speak directly to the hearts of your target audience. The right title can lift your book off the shelf, while a generic one blends into the background.
2. Determine the Genre
Each genre sets expectations. Are you writing a mystery or a romance? In branding, every question you pose is a genre decision that guides your audience's expectations. Be clear about the answers you're promising with your brand narrative.
3. Write the Chapters
Every brand has layers. The visible aspects, like your logo, the underlying tone, and the deeper existential reasons for existing all play a role in your narrative. Don’t rush through these chapters; they unfold in their own time.
4. Choose the Scenes
Reflect on the scenes that define your brand. Are you stuck in familiar patterns, or are you ready to transition to new narratives? This is about letting go of the past and embracing the evolution of your brand.
5. Color in the Lines
Sketch out your brand as it stands today. This exercise isn’t about perfection; it’s about authenticity. By visualizing your brand, you can identify areas for growth and ensure that your brand identity is clear and intentional.
Write Your Own Story -- Backwards
Here's the secret every great author already knows, the one nobody tells you until it's too late. The last page gets written before the first one does. The grand finale of an event, the adrenaline of an adventure built as an emotional high, the peak of a single human being's whole personal experience, none of it was written front to back. Every one of them was written backward, ending first, everything before it built only to carry you there.
That is the entire book I want to write with you today. Designing with the end in mind, told as five moves, the way you'd write any story worth remembering.
Amera includes this powerful reminder: If your brand identity isn’t showing, your brand presence isn’t growing in Episode 3 of Pause Twice | The Podcast. The grand finale of your brand journey needs to be intentionally crafted from the start. It’s time to stop hoping your story will write itself and start with the last page first.
